About

Hello. My name is David Weinfeld. I'm in my fifth year of the joint doctoral program in history and Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University. I'm originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I study American Jewish intellectual history, though I'm also interested in American, European, Jewish, and intellectual history more broadly. My dissertation in on the intellectual relationship between Horace Kallen and Alain Locke and the concept of cultural pluralism in the United States.

I earned my AB cum laude in history from Harvard in 2005. I wrote my senior thesis on evolving comic Jewish stereotypes in post-WW2 America, specifically the schlemiel, the Jewish Mother and the Jewish American Princess.

I live in Washington Heights with my wonderful, brilliant beautiful, and hilarious wife Julie. In my spare time, I enjoy eating, reading science fiction novels, watching comedy (television, standup, movies), watching baseball, boxing, and horror movies, and blogging. I especially love meat and chocolate.

You can check out my blog, which I write with several other doctoral students in history, at www.phdoctopus.com. We blog about history, as well as current events, pop culture, politics, and everything in between, though always (or almost always) with a historical perspective in mind.
